I design and create one-off ceramic sculptures of people some – with humorous qualities, all of which capture the observed essence of human behaviour. I like to think that my sculptures are humorous and slightly whimsical and that all of my pieces are unique in both form and personality. I see my work as three dimensional paintings, working with themes that may evoke some underlying meaning, that even I’m not aware of. My work is concerned with movement, gesture and interaction in an attempt to capture a moment in
time.
I only make figures of happy people, – people who are enjoying themselves or exploring themselves. My sculptures often bring a good mood or a smile to people who are looking at them.
My inspiration comes from observing life around me: human nature is immensely interesting to me and I want to express it all in my sculptures. I do not seek anatomical perfection, preferring instead a stylised technique that I feel retains the expression of human behaviour. Each new piece of work is a result of a thousand thoughts… and a thousand of observations.
Each piece is individually hand-made using joined earth-stone clay slabs, glazed and fired in electric kiln up to four times at firing temperature up to 1250ºC.
Away from my full time work as a technical consultant for the Building Research Establishment I like nothing better than to fill my time as an artist, and like to spend my weekends and evenings creating new designs. Hopefully this pleasure will be conveyed to all who possessed my figures, be it just a single piece or a collection, and my wish is that they derive many years of joy from my work.
